Chapter 01 - Organizing Chaos

In no uncertain terms, Bernays lays out his belief that society is - and it could be no other way - led by a small group of individuals that pull the wires of the masses. These influencers exercise their control largely unaware by the masses, who are too busy with their own lives to have any time (let alone inkling or ability as per Bernays) to dissect the problems of his society. Man does not even have the time or ability to make up his own mind when it comes to what he is going to eat, let alone how his society and economy should be governed.

These ideas and solutions are brought to the masses through a centralized campaign in the mass media. Phrases replace the ideas themselves and are sustained until they can no longer be questioned.

It really reminds one of the famous Goebbel's quote: 'If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it.'

Introduction

An introduction to the seminal work of Edward Bernays. This, while not explicitly the first work on what would become modern day public relations, is, in my opinion, the foundational piece on understanding the depth of the role propaganda plays in every single part of a society.

The book itself is undoubtedly the most easy to access of the early works on propaganda and can easily be understood by anyone that takes the time to explore it. It utilizes common language and does not waste time mincing words.
